A night in June 1791, the libertine writer, Restif de la Bretonne, decides to follow a mysterious carriage as it discreetly leaves the Royal Palace. From one way station to the next, the passengers of the stage coach have time to become acquainted as they talk of life, love, politics and the revolution... They soon learn that the royal family is fleeing Paris and heading for Varennes where the passengers witness their arrest. A landmark night in the history of France.

In May 1789, two young women take the veil under the Carmelite order at Compiègne. One of the young novices, Blanche seems obsessed by a fear of death. The convent is soon threatened by the revolutionaries. The despoiled, hunted Carmelites vow to become martyrs. They are arrested and sentenced to death. Ruled by her dread of death, Sister Blanche flees. But on the day of the nuns' execution, she overcomes her fears and resolutely joins her Sisters on the scaffold.

His stubborn devotion touches Harriet who marries him, and they have a son. But Berlioz's string of failures take their toll and his marriage falls apart. At last, he finds happiness with Marie, a retired singer who has always loved him, but she dies of a heart attack.

Hélène does not report him to the police but is curious to learn the reasons for his action. Before dying of a terrible fever, the man confesses that he murdered her husband.

Young Danielle's engagement is suddenly broken. She goes back to Jenny, her mother, unaware that the nightclub she is running is a cover-up for a house of joy. Jenny is also supporting a young lover called Lucien who falls in love with Danielle. When Lucien is seriously injured in a fight, Jenny goes to visit him in the hospital where she runs into her daughter. Moved by their love, Jenny decides not to come between the two.
