Chief Inspector Joss is terribly cut up by the death of his partner Gouvion, who was killed during a hold-up. To avenge his friend, he devises the perfect frame-up: he lets two gangs in on the same job and then sits back as they kill each other off. Once the French underworld is cleaned out, Joss can rest content and retire.

In a bar, Ferdinand, a young photographer, meets and falls in love with a young thief called Claire. One day after taking her picture with a man, Fred gets knocked out, and wakes up to find his film has been stolen. But when the police question him, Fred remains silent. Touched by his discretion, Claire tells him that the man in the picture is actually a goon who is riding roughshod over her. Claire and Fred try to start a life together but a rough road lies ahead for the young lovers.

Bertrand, a rich real-estate developer, leads a quiet life until his right-hand man Christian starts blackmailing him. He wants Bertrand to double his wages and let him marry Colette, Bertrand's daughter and Christian's lover. Christian also admits that he has been robbing Bertrand for years. The plot thickens when it turns out that Christian's mistress is not Colette and that she is pregnant by Oscar, the chauffeur.
