The Renaud family describes him as nasty and selfish. Although he doesn't doubt that they are his real family, he decides to reject them.

But it turns out he is a suspect, he is arrested and sentenced to death. The date of his execution is nigh but luckily Adrienne succeeds in proving his innocence.

Three years later, Mattéo shows up in Paris, upsetting the pair's settled life. Realizing what he has done, Mattéo reconciles the two, and commits suicide.

Pozdnycheff is arrested and sentenced to prison. But his still devoted wife is waiting from him when he is released.

But the captain's men spirit him away so that he can breath his last on the open sea.

Hélène does not report him to the police but is curious to learn the reasons for his action. Before dying of a terrible fever, the man confesses that he murdered her husband.

But the Czar categorically refuses to abdicate and dies at the hands of the dissenters.
