In 1867 at Baden-Baden, Alexei is the tutor of General Zagorianski's children. He finds out that his employer is wallowing in debt and just biding his time until he inherits from an aging aunt. Alexei loves Pauline, Zagorianski's step-daughter who has fallen for the Marquis DesGrieux. The elderly aunt loses all her money gambling. Since Pauline's only allure for DesGrieux was the expected inheritance, he breaks off with her. The wretched Pauline confides in Alexis who decides to try his luck at the tables.

Pozdnycheff is arrested and sentenced to prison. But his still devoted wife is waiting from him when he is released.
