Frémissin may be a lawyer but he is also pathologically shy. The young man's first closing arguments in court are so dreadful that his client loses, and is sent to jail. When the client gets out of prison, he wants to marry Cécile, the daughter of Attorney Thibaudier, also a distressingly bashful man. However, Cécile is in love with Frémissin who doesn't dare ask for her hand in marriage.
