Etzel finds out that early in his career as a prosecuting attorney his father sentenced a man called Léonard Maurizius, on mere circumstantial evidence. Young Etzel, a seeker of justice true to his convictions, investigates the case and learns the truth. He proves Maurizius's innocence, but eighteen years in prison has robbed the man of his joy in life. With dedicated commitment, Etzel takes up the battle against convictions based on the presumption of guilt.
