After the war, Charles goes to South America to seek his fortune but soon wakes up to reality. After a bank error by a young clerk called Maria, he gets his hands on a large sum of money. But he gives the money back so the young woman won't get into trouble. They fall passionately in love. Together they face poverty and experience adventures that will endanger their feelings and their lives.
