Paris 1887, the elderly Countess de Bonafé lives with her son and grand-daughter, Douce, in a town house. Douce loves Fabien, the steward, but discovers that he is having an affair with her governess, Irene. But the Count is in love with Irene, and asks her to marry him. Douce elopes with the steward but the dream of love soon vanishes. After the young woman dies in a fire, Fabien and Irene are thrown out of the house.
